“It’s that much heralded thing, the quality of life, that is important. How you live your life, what you get out of it, what you put into it and what you leave behind after it. We should aim for a good and rich life well lived and, at the end of it, in the comfort of our own home, in the company of those who love us, have a death worth dying for.”

Pt.1
The Brechtian Effect

This video is a study into the Brechtian Effect, adapting 5 interpretations of Ophelia’s madness in Hamlet. At the start of the video her attention is on the material. She counts money, she goes through her possessions. Putting on a watch to see what time it is and if it fits. She looks at a ring under the lamp only to check her appearance afterwards. Applying make-up. She gets up, leaving the desk tidy but taking the flowers that were on the desk. Now she sings to them, the lyrics are sorrowful but to an upbeat tempo, this is when she starts referring to herself in the 3rd person. An upbeat funeral march then follows, playing in the background and sang over by the woman with an expressionless face. This is known as the alienation or V effect, as she is separated from character. This switches again by contrasting to a dramatic description of flowers (or material) and their meaning. Interpreting the narrative with a monologue for the audience to follow. Here we see her as Ophelia – the person/ the actress/ character. She then dies in a unrealistic manner however being grounded not soon before.

The sound and the fury.

“I once read somewhere that for a culture to really be a complete culture, it should have a music, a dance and a visual art. And then I realized, wow, all these things are going on. You got the graffiti happening over here, you got the breakdancing, and you got the DJ and MCing thing. In my head, they were all one thing,” he says. FAB understood the history if artistic movements, and he realized he was right at the beginning of a big one. He had an idea to set it off.
